My wife and I had our interview on September 8th of this year and it went smoothly with no issues. We arrived early with our documents, pictures, etc. Since we had an early appointment around 9am, there was available, free parking. The waiting room was crowded, and as other interviewees mentioned, most people were in very casual dress. We dressed nicely, but not formal.
We were worried about our case because my wife is from China and was living in the US (adjusting her status from student) while I have been working in Japan for a US company. However, because I still keep my residence at my parents' home in Michigan, with US bank accounts, voter registration, etc. we didn't run into questions about our distance apart.
We were very careful in our application and rather than hire a lawyer, we made phone calls to Chinese-American lawyers in New York City to ask questions. They were good about answering our general questions about our unique situation. The only mistake we made was using my Japan address on my application rather than my US residence--we had to resubmit some documents and this delayed the process for probably a couple months.
As far as the interview itself, she asked the standard questions of my wife, asked us to give her any documents we had, and then said she would approve her case! It was probably a total of 10 minutes, plus the extra time to get a stamp on her passport since she wanted to return to China prior to receiving the greencard to attend Chinese Thanksgiving in Shanghai.
We were pleased with that part of the process, but it was frustrating waiting for the few updates that are given prior to the interview. In the end, the entire process was about exactly 8 months.
