We had the earliest interview slot (8.00 am) and we're based in Melbourne so we flew to Sydney the night before. We got to the consulate about 30 mins early, it was a bit hard to see since it was all boarded up. We had to wait outside shivering in the cold until they let us in small batches at a time. They asked if we had an appointment and marked off me and my fiance's names (we got permission for him to accompany me!) and gave us a stern warning about turning our phones off and recording being strictly forbidden.
At the first counter, I was asked for my passport, photos and DS-160 first, and then for my birth certificate and copies. She reassured me that I'd get the original back later. She asked if we've been married before and I said No, I missed the next thing she said and I thought it would be along the same vein so I said no, but turns out she was asking for the police reports, and I almost missed out on giving them oops. She then gave me the orange IMBRA card and sent me on my way.
Then we went through security and they made us put everything in our pockets and our phones and coats into the trays (just like at the airport!) Very straightforward, I thought they might hold something but they returned everything to us. Then we went up the elevator into the and was directed to the side we needed to go on.
.
At the first counter, I did the oath and fingerprints and they got my file from the back and basically sorted the documents together. They also asked for my revalidation letter which I had but many people didn't for some reason, so don't forget that! :> I got a ticket and got to sit for awhile with my fiance watching the screens for my number to pop up and chatting with the other applicants.
When my number was up, I went up to the counter alone and the CO asked me if I had read the orange card and asked for it back (I had put it in my folder lol). The interview was more open ended and less straight questions to answers like I've been practicing so it kinda threw me off a little. I'll list down the questions I got but remember it will be like a conversation and the follow up questions will be from the answers you give.
1. What visa you’re here for?
2. How did you and fiance meet? (I was nervous so I messed up the dates, later I tried to correct it but he said he had everything there)
3. Confirmed the timeline
Then I said he’s been living with me for a year and half on a partner visa
4. What does he like about Australia? (I said the public transport lol)
5. How did you decide to get married? (I got a bit confused and talked what the proposal was like)
6. What does he do for work?
7. He brought up my I-129F (printed in black and white) and pointed out a photo where I was kissing my fiance at my friend's wedding and said this photo looks like wedding, you didn't get married right? (I said no I was a bridesmaid and said I had the original in colour but he didn't want to see it and moved on)
8. What are your plans after moving to America?
9. Where does his parents live?
He was asking a lot of questions so I was nervous, but CO finally said it was approved (yay!) and that the consulate will send my passport back in around 2 weeks. He asked me if I paid for the courier service thing and I said yes I have a copy of the receipt but he didn't want to see it lol
Good luck! You got this! My interview was not as perfect as I imagined and practiced in my head but I still got approved and that's all that matters. I tried to be as detailed as I could so I hope it was helpful ! <3
