I attended the interview with my fiancée, Nhi. Our appointment was today, 9/30/2024 at 7:30 a.m. At 7:00 a.m. sharp, the rush to the front of the line began and we were about number 20ish in line with 70ish people behind us. Appointment Letters and DS-160 Confirmation pages were checked by the guards outside. After submitting the required paperwork inside, it took about 3 hours until Nhi and I were called to window 18 for our interview. There was only a few people remaining once it was time for us to be interviewed.
They first asked Nhi if she spoke English. She said a little bit. They swore Nhi in Vietnamese. They let me stand right next to my fiancée while the interviewer interviewed us both one at a time. I was first on the chopping block while Nhi stood right next to me.
I was asked 5 questions in English:
1. What do I do for work?
2. What did Nhi (my fiancée) do for work?
3. How did we meet? Her great uncle introduced us. They did not ask for the family tree/spousal relationship form even though we had one prepared to show them.
4. What were my hobbies?
5. What were the dates of our Dinh Hon/Engagement party? The interviewer did not ask for any photos, but I had a bad feeling and shoved a stack of maybe ~100 of our Dinh Hon photos through the window slot and sorta forced her to look at them unsolictedly.
They then turned over to Nhi and the translator was used:
1. What did I (the petitioner) do for work?
2. What did Nhi (my fiancée) do for work?
3. How did we meet?
4. What were my (the fiancé/petitioner's) hobbies? She answered this question completely wrong.
5. Did we have a Dinh Hon/Engagement party? How many American guests were present?
She answered all questions correctly, except for Question #4.
After maybe 30 seconds of non-stop typing, the interviewer told us the visa had been approved and that we will receive it in 2-4 weeks.
We had compiled 3 binders full of evidences: spousal relationship (family tree) form, Zalo and Messenger app chat logs, a detailed 3-page relationship timeline, a photo relationship timeline (created on Our Love Visa), photographs from each my 3 visits, social media posts, boarding passes, flight itineraries, passport stamps, airline tickets credit card statements, and a money transfer receipt of who paid for the engagement party.
They did not look at any of the evidence that we had brought to the interview (other than me shoving the Dinh Hon photos through the window slot). The interviewer did not even ask us for the I-134 Financial documents
As others have said, I do believe they decide way ahead of time if they were going to approve or deny. They seemed to not really care that my fiancée and I missed one question, or even mentioned our age gap. They looked at the Dinh Hon photos and said that they were really cute. Despite being the last few people left in the insanely hot interview room at the end of the day, we were glad that we overprepared than to underprepare and receive a refusal slip.
