I had my K1 Visa appointment at the US Embassy in London on the 3rd September at 9:30am.
I arrived to the embassy at 8:30am and the cue for the visa was already very long. After half hour an embassy employee made his was down the cue checking passports and DS-160 confirmations. As I was there for the K-1 Visa interview he sent me straight to the front of the cue to be checked in.
After being checked in at the desk I was sent to the front of the security line where I waited for another 20 minutes.
You cannot take any personal laptops through security so try not to bring one or make sure you go and store it at the lockers in the cafe across the road before you cue. I paid £6 to store my laptop as I had to go straight to work after.
After going through security you walk through the courtyard and into the main entrance of the embassy. Again there was a huge snake like cue to get to the front desk. I got to the front of the cue just after 10am where they scanned my DS-160 and handed me a ticket number.
They then told me to head up to the first floor and I was shown which waiting area to sit in for the K1 Visa interviews. There are big screens to show you when your number is called and which booth to go to. They also have free WiFi and you can be on your phone.
The first time I was called up the gentlemen asked me for the following documents which he kept:
- My Passport
- A Passport Photo (only asked for 1)
- Courier confirmation for posting my passport back to me
- My Birth Certificate
- The signed I-134 Form & My Fiancé’s (US Citizens) most recent Tax Statement
- My Divorce Certificate (Decree absolute)
He then asked if I had done the visa medical which I had done two weeks prior. He said they had not received it yet and I should call them to give them a nudge as they cannot approve the visa without it.
But he was very nice about it.
I was then told to sit back down and wait for the interview.
My number was called again around 11:30am.
I was greeted by a different gentleman who was reviewing all my documents.
He then asked me the following questions:
- Where and when did I meet my finance
- When did we get engaged
- Where does my finance live in the USA, and are we planning to marry/live there
- what does my finance do for work
He then mentioned they hadn’t received my visa medical, and I was the 3rd person that he spoke to that morning whose visa medical had not been sent through in time. He said it was common.
He said to call them afterwards to chase them, and that my visa would be approved 3-4 days after they receive the approved medical exam.
I left the embassy at 12 noon so I was there for a total of 3.5hrs.
I then called the visa medical and the lady told me it was all signed off by the doctor and being sent to the embassy in the afternoon.
My visa status was changed to “Approved” on the 9th September (6 days later) and then to “Issued “ on the 10th September.
I received a notification from the courier service the next day on the 11th September, and my passport and documents arrived on the 12th September.
I found the U.K. Embassy Appointment to be straight forward and the gentlemen i dealt with were very nice to deal with. All in all a good experience.
