My experience at the consulate went smoothly. I had an early appointment. You wait by the iron gates until they call your name, after which you get sent to the security check. They scan your belongings with a metal detector, and everything you don't need for your interview goes in a locker. You can access this locker at any time in case you forget something.

Next, you get in line for the document check. This can be a long wait the later your appointment is. Mine was about half an hour and I was among the earliest appointments. The staff member was very friendly (they all were if you have your documents well-prepared and orderly). However! For some reason, my daughter's medical records were not in their file. Even though this was an internal processing issue, this would have stopped the appointment then and there if hadn't brought physical copies of every single document—so be sure to do that!

After the document scan, you wait for the interview. There are a few seats available. Restrooms are around the corner to the back. The actual interview is not in an office but rather at a counter. Here too, the agent was super friendly and most of his questions—such as what my husband does for a living, where he lives,...—were asked as part of a conversation. I never felt intimidated or worried. By the end of the (maybe 10 minute?) interview, I was told I'd passed and that I would receive my visa in the mail, which I did on Monday—the interview was on Friday.
All-in-all a smooth experience!
