Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

My visa appointment was at 1 pm (all Immigrant Visas (IV) are at 1 pm) BUT you are allowed to enter the embassy from 11:30 am (which is recommended).

Once you enter, you have to wait in order of entrance (first come, first serve). At 12:00, the first person is called to a window to provide original documents. At this window, you'll have to provide - your original birth certificate, original marriage certificate, all original background checks (if applicable), original divorce degree (if applicable), and 1 photo (US standards). There were address changes to my DS-260 so I provided an errata sheet as well at this window. Then you are asked to sit down and wait for your interview. You will also provide fingerprints.

At 1 pm, the first person is called for an interview. The procedure is as follows:

1) Raise your right hand and take an oath swearing all documents are correct.

2) Questions: We were missing a background check from China (our employer did not cooperate, so we were unable to get it) so I got lots of questions about our time in China, what we did there, where we worked and if we got into trouble. We provided a detailed explanation with evidence to explain the steps we took to get it and why we couldn't, which was accepted)

3) I traveled back to South Africa (my home country in June/July) so I got lots of questions about that, and they requested an updated background check (which I had).

4) Questions about my husband - where he works, what he does, and questions about our children - how many children, where are they now?

5) And that was it, visa approved (we have been married for 10 years, so no questions about proof of relationship).
6) Fingerprints again
7) Tourist Visa canceled
8) And he wished me good luck!

There were about 15 IV applicants waiting, so the process is slow and takes a long time. You have to be there at 11:30 so you can enter first. The consular officer was friendly and kind, but the lady who takes the documents was kinda mean, and abrupt. She stressed me out completely and basically said my visa won't be issued because I didn't upload the new SA background check to the NVC - so the whole time I was waiting for my interview I was stressed out! Which turned out to be not true, because the CO just wanted to see the new background check.

I was out of there by 14:00. Very happy that it's done!

OH: Not all applicants went smoothly There was a K1 visa for who they requested the fiance joins the interview (not a good sign) and some ppl who did not have the original documents - so make sure you have ALL the originals needed).

GOOD LUCK!
