I had my K-1 visa interview on July 1st 2022 at the US embassy in London.
I stayed at the Premier Inn Clapham the night before which was a 30 minute walk to the embassy (practically a straight line walk), it was the one of the few hotels left available (Wimbledon was on).
My interview was scheduled for 10am and I arrived just before 9:30, after composing myself I joined the short line outside the security entrance. At this point I was requested to show my passport and DS-160 confirmation, the person signed it and then said I was allowed to enter the security area. I was asked to open the main pouch of my backup and asked to empty my pockets, I then walked through the metal detector and was requested to take a sip of my water. I then entered the reception area and joined a queue, they asked to see my signed confirmation and placed a sticker with a number on. As I was early, they directed me to join another queue with a bunch of other people. At about 9:45 I was called by name and directed by the receptionist to take the elevator up to the first floor, and then head left and left again.
I entered a small area with about 6 windows and some fold down chairs, above the chairs were screens listing the current numbers being served (each window also had a screen with the active number above it too). I sat down briefly and within minutes my number popped up on one of the rightmost windows. This was the part of the interview I was most worried about because I was self-sponsoring. I was first asked to show my DS-160 and passport, I was then asked for my fingerprints and then for the following documents:
Police Certificate
Birth Certificate
1 Passport picture
I-134 form.
I handed the first three over and then told the officer that "I understand I can self-sponsor and have brought evidence to support that". She asked me what I had, and I responded that I had bank statements (12 months worth, unevenly split across 2 accounts, about 90k GBP in total). She then asked if I had an I-134, and I told her I did not. The officer then handed me a form detailing my rights and asked me to sit back down and wait to be called again by a different window.
A few minutes later I was called up to a different window and was met by a friendly American chap, he requested my fingerprints again and then asked me the following questions while flicking through my documents:
How we met?
How often I visited?
What does my fiance do for a living?
What do I do for a living?
What are our wedding plans?
After that, the interviewer told me I was approved and that I should expect to receive my visa and passport in 5-10 working days. I was back outside the embassy by 10am.
The whole process was a piece of cake, and a whole lot easier than I thought it was going to go in my mind. If you aren't self sponsoring (even then, it shouldn't matter) then you have nothing to worry about.
