Review Topic: K1 Visa

Our appointment was on 6/22/21 at 9:45 am. We arrived to the area around 9 am and found parking for 200 pesos in a nearby parking lot. There was a small office attached to the lot where we kept our personal belongings and a lady reviewed and organized our papers (not part of the embassy) for a total of 500 pesos.

We walked about five minutes to the embassy where we saw a long line. There was nobody providing instructions for which line to go to so my fiancé went to find someone at the front who guided us to the blue immigrant visa line, which was much shorter than the non-immigrant visa line.

We walked through security and into a separate building. Please note you can’t bring your cell phone, purse, electronics (Apple watch), water or food. Although, they do have water available inside. We were greeted and shown where to sit (by the bathroom) to wait to submit our papers. The building is comprised of a large waiting area, small front counter where you can print documents, and windows (with an office behind) where the employees and consular officers sit. We were told to go to a window and submitted our documents (medical exam, birth certificate, passport, I-134 form and police records. Then, we were told to sit in the waiting area. This was the difficult part as we waited for about two and a half hours and were very nervous.

Finally, my fiancé’s name was called on the speaker and we went to window 20 where we were greeted by an American woman who spoke English and Spanish. We were asked to raise our right hands and confirm everything in the application and said in the interview was the truth. My fiancé was asked to complete fingerprints and then given a paper on domestic violence. She asked my fiancé a few questions and then me (see below for list of questions.) Then, she asked us to converse in English to prove to her my fiancé could speak since we told her we mainly communicate in English. She did not ask for any other documents or proof of a relationship, although we showed her our wedding invitation (and brought a lot of photos with us.) After speaking with her for about ten minutes she told us his K1 visa was approved and would be ready to pick up at Jumbo in Punta Cana in about one week.

(I rated 4 stars because of the long wait. Many people who came after us were interviewed before us which was frustrating.)
