Because of the distance, traveling and overnighting in Helsinki was the best option. There were relatively cheap air bnbs near the consulate, and his appointment was at 9:00am.
Upon arrival, first the security people told him to stash his backpack in a café because they wouldn't allow him like have it on himself in the premise or whatever (kind of odd -- but okay). Apparently this is in the instructions for interviewing and easily missed.
Security consisted of airport like security.
After security, he waited in the waiting room for about 10 minutes and a Finnish guy asked for all the documents and told him to go back into the waiting room. About 15 minutes later or he was called back in to like talk to the consulate officer (who had really cool hair and was kind of laid back).
Questions asked: Where did we meet, what does your fiancé do, when do you plan on flying to the US, what sort of wedding/ceremony will you have. Questions asked specifically about him were about his current employment and what he plans on doing in the US.
My fiancé has a criminal record and a conviction, (not paying back student aid after resigning from university - convicted of fraud) with fine (over 5k euros) and probation. The conviction at the time of interview was about 8 years ago, and since then he's not had any other law enforcement interactions. This conviction did not show on the Finnish police report request, but we had all his court documents printed out, officially translated, and available, but the CO never asked a question regarding it.
After the interview, the CO gave a verbal approval, and said that if there's anything else she needs they would email. They took his passport and said that because of COVID processing times are running about 1-3 for the K1 visa.
