Interview for K1 visa at the US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. I am going to provide as much info as I can. I know I love to have a lot of info, so perhaps someone will find this helpful
Our NOA2 was March 30 2020. Due to covid our case was delayed over a year. Our petition was approved for expedite in March 2021 and interview was scheduled for April 8th 2021.
The embassy scheduled our interview date and time, and the NVC sent us notification of our biometric appointment after the DS-160 was complete, fee was paid, and petition was received at the embassy. The embassy sent us a pdf with the medical exam instructions about 3 weeks before our interview. The embassy did not send us the K1 interview instructions until the day before our interview, despite me asking multiple times for it to be sent. Thankfully, we were able to determine what was needed through some internet research.
We arrived at the embassy at 7:10 am for our 7:45 am appointment. We walked up and they asked us to return to the entrance at 7:35. Across the street there is a place for coffee and plenty of small companies who provide services for photocopies, passport photos, etc.
We walked back to the entrance at 7:35 and they let us right in. We were one of the first to walk through and were first in the immigrant visa line. The woman immediately called us forward and assisted us with putting our documents in a specific order. They asked for the DS-160 confirmation page, birth certificate, police records, passport photos, passport and I-134 form. She then asked if we had a photocopy of everything she asked us to pull out. We did not have copies of everything so we were sent across the street to get copies. The shop moved very fast and we were back at the embassy in about 10 minutes. We did not have to wait in line and were called back up. The woman once again checked that we had photocopies of everything and that it was all in order.
Next checkpoint was for security to check our bag and to walk through the metal detectors. Pretty straightforward
From there we entered the main waiting area where the agent confirmed our info. They have a hand washing station for covid and required that we go wash our hands thoroughly before sitting down in the immigrant visa section. The waiting area is outside so we made sure to bring jackets. It is covered in case of rain and there is a place for coffee.
We waited about 10 minutes before being called to the first window. The agent once again checked all of the papers and made sure everything was signed and correct. He took all of the papers and the beneficiary’s passport and put it with the file that had our original petition. He asked us to have a seat and wait to be called again.
We waited about another 10 minutes and were called up to a different window. I walked up with my fiancé but stood to the side. The agent spoke with my fiancé while going through our file and asked about various things:
How did we meet?
How long have we been together?
How did my fiancé propose?
Where will fiancé live in the US?
What is petitioners job?
Where will we get married?
How long were we both living in the country where we met (Peru)?
The agent also asked some questions while going through our photos, tying together the timeline of our relationship. In all, the interview was about 10 minutes long.
I came prepared with our original petition, continued evidence of our relationship since our petition approval, and my financial support proof (employment letter, IRS transcripts, W2s, bank statements). The agent did not ask for anything additional, but I am glad I was prepared just in case.
The agent then notified my fiancé that he was approved, and that they would be keeping his passport until it is ready to pick up in 1-2 weeks.
We left the embassy about an hour and a half after we initially arrived. The agents were very nice and it was a positive experience!
