This experience was for me IR-1/CR-1 VISA for immediate relative of US citizen in the Kuala Lumpur KL US Embassy in January 2020.
I received the notice from NVC side that my case has been approved and submitted to the KL Embassy. It took roughly 3 weeks for them to send the interview date out, and it is scheduled for a month out. As soon as I received the date for my interview, I scheduled my medical and prepared my documents for the interview.
My interview was the first appointment time for the day at 8AM. I arrived at 730AM, and there was just a couple ahead of me in line. The embassy isn't open yet, so I wait outside in the heat when they finally open the counter a little past 8AM. No electronics was allowed in, so I kept my phone, powerbank and keys in their locker. When inside, they have a checklist ready for the documents you need (had to get rid of the one I created), and you need to arrange the documents in order before they give you a counter ticket. After I got the ticket, I first went to a counter where a lady looked through my documents and took my birth certificate, passport and police certificate. She told me to take a seat after looking through all the documents.
I waited for about 30 more minutes before my number was called out again. This time it was a gentlemen who asked for my document packet while asking me some questions (all these were done in an open counter, where people behind you can hear everything.) It was pretty simple questions, asking me how long I have been in the US (I went to school there), and what I majored in, where I had worked and lived. Then, he asked more personal questions like how I met my husband, what he does for work and where he is right now. He did not ask any intrusive questions as I was expecting? They were all very general. I painstakingly prepared affidavits of support from my friends, a bunch of screenshots of chats and photographs together but he didn't ask for any of them. The interview was less than 10 minutes long? (Maybe 5?) It happened very quickly. For the last bit, he said that my passport would then be mailed back to me in a week - pretty vague and not really telling me if I was approved. But yes, I was approved, and the passport actually came back to me in 3 working days which was great.
The US Embassy in KL is pretty efficient, and they even have a whatsapp number to address questions. A positive experience despite the waiting time. Hopefully that is consistent with everyone.
