AOS through marriage, arrived on K1 in May, married in June, applied in July, Approved in November. i485, i864, i131, i765.
Interview scheduled at 8:30am, we arrived at 8:00am. There was a line, we waited outside in the cold for 20 minutes as they only let one applicant in at a time to go through the metal detector. We were told to take off our shoes. My wife was waiting for me to put my shoes on the belt, but was barked at by one of the 5 security officers there to also take off her shoes immediately. We went through quickly; we didnt have any metal on us and our phones were in the car. Next person comes up to the security check and they are speaking English with an accent; immediately one of the officers begins to mock this individual. I understand these people are here only for security type purposes, but a level of compassion and professionalism would go a long way, especially for the setting they work in.
We went to two windows. First window took a picture of my wife and scanned her fingerprints. We got a stamp on our appointment notice and moved to the second window, where they took our notice and told us to wait. We waited for 20 minutes and were called in by an officer who had trouble pronouncing my wife's name. This is no big problem honestly, but it is a confusing system when the officer has to come out and call a name they don't know how to pronounce and we're sitting there wondering if it is us or not. Don't worry, we figured it out.
The interview was extremely straightforward and I thank our officer for being straightforward with us while also remaining humane and kind. We were "sworn" in and conducted the interview as follows:
1. Show both of our birth certificates and marriage license (remember, need notarization)
2. To both of us individually: date of birth, own parents' name, country of origin
3. To petitioner: Do you understand the i-864? (contract between US gov't and petitioner to keep beneficiary from becoming a public charge)
4. 40 Qs from the i-485 for her (it's all "no")
5. Small questions about our relationship: "Where did you meet?", "When did you meet?", "Have you met within the 2 years prior to coming here on the K-1 visa?", "Do you live with anyone else in your household"
6. Open ended request for further evidence if we had any; we provided written testimonies of our relationship signed by friends, copy of money transfers between accounts, Photos of our wedding and honeymoon.
We were told we passed the interview and our green card would be in production within a month and was asked to leave. I was confused we didn't get anything in writing and our status online stated our case needed to be reviewed up until Wednesday. But sure enough, we received it 1 week later.
