Review Topic: K1 Visa

We walked to the consular building from our hotel (Jim's Lodge on the soi behind the embassy, recommended) arriving at 6:50 for her 7:30am interview on April 9. Lots of folks already there for a variety of visas. Stayed together until it was time for her to get in line under the canopy where her passport was checked against a list of appointments. (Canopy was a nice touch since I was there last). She entered the building right after her appointment was verfied, all together about 15 minutes from our arrival. Met another guy who also accompanied his fiance and we crossed the pedestrian bridge to get coffee and wait.
She handed over her phone and purse, went through the metal detector and was directed to a seating area. K1 visa applicants were called to line up with their passports and were given a Thailand Post EMS label where the applicants were instructed to enter a mailing address and take a seat in the waiting area. (NOTE: bring a pen and paper so you can write down the EMS number shown on the address label. This will enable you to check the progress of delivery of your visa on the Thailand Post website.)Applicants were called by seating position - sit in first chair, get called first to window A, B or C where you hand over the packet 4 documents.

Now..the packet 4 instructions list is almost a duplicate of the packet 3 document requirements which we had submitted previously. Ok, I made another copy of everything we had submitted in the packet 3 along with some updated photos and airline boarding passes for the Evidence of Relationship. She handed over her original Birth Certificate and Single Certificate along with the certified translations (BTW: Express Translations is about a 15 minute walk from our hotel and the embassy.) They kept the original single certificate, returned the original Birth Certificate and kept the updated Evidence of Relationship. Embassy did not want the 2 photos that were 'required' by the packet 4 instructions?? (Embassy used the photos we submitted with the packet 3 for the visa page)

We had previously mailed the medical exam results to the Embassy from the small post office in the basement of Baumregrad hospital when the exam was completed, so they already had the exam. (I followed up with the embassy via email a few days after the exam and prior to the interview to check that the exam results were received Embassy replied same day that the results had been received and reviewed and everything was in order.)

After the document check, she was directed to the large waiting room inside and told to wait with other K1 applicants until called. There are a series of counters/windows and applicants are called by first name to approach a counter/window. She was called to counter 5 where the older US counsular official (who has been mentioned in previous reviews) greeted her and my fiance returned the greeting in English. (How are you, I'm fine and you? Yes? I'm fine...regular friendly chit chat. Very polite, nice guy)

Offiical looked through papers from packet 3 and original single certificate. She was asked the standard questions: When did you first meet your fiance? Where did you meet your fiance? What was your fiance doing there (where we met)? Where will you live in the US? That's it...Visa Approved. Thank you.

Visa was mailed from embassy that evening (9 April) and delivered in southern Thailand in the afternoon today, 11 April. Great service from the consular folks.

BTW: I have compiled a list of every question shown in the consular reviews for the past year. My fiance and I studied the questions and we wrote out answers to all the questions and practiced the questions and answers in English for two weeks prior to the interview. Some of questions will generate the same answer but the wording of questions changes slightly so the applicant doesn't get confused by the change in how the same question asked. Really helped relax her knowing the answers prior to the questions. You can copy and paste into a text editor like Notepad or Word and fill in your own answers.
