My fiance had his interview at the Johannesburg consulate this morning and was granted our K1 visa! After 9 months of waiting, we finally have it! We are very thankful to the Lord for His guidance and mercy. Here is my fiance's experience as he relayed it to me:
He arrived at the consulate at 8:15am for a 9:00am appointment. He stood in the first queue for about 45 minutes. He showed his passport, appointment letter, receipt for bank deposit and DS-156 form and was then given a number to proceed to the security checkpoint queue. He stayed in that line for about 10 minutes at which point they took his medical envelope from him to keep for the case worker. He was told to go to window 7/8 and wait for his number to be called. After waiting an hour and a half, he was called to the window and was asked to present all the same documents as before along with the police certificates, birth certificates, I-134 and my last year's tax return, DS-156 and DS-157. He then was told to sit back down while they prepared his file.
After another hour passed, he was called back to the window. The interviewer then asked him some very basic questions including: Where did you meet? How did you communicate for the first 6 months of your relationship? How do you communicate now? Do you have copies of phone records? How many siblings do you have? How many siblings does she have? Did you meet her family while in the US? She never asked for any pictures or e-mails or any proof of ongoing relationship other than the phone records. He said that it took about 10 minutes and that it was all very easy and straightforward questions. They told him he was approved and would be issued the visa and to proceed to the next line to find out how things would progress from there.
He waited in that line for about 30 minutes and then spoke with the man who arranged for the DHL and told him what to expect in the package he would be receiving most likely in the next few days. His passport with the visa and a sealed envelope to be kept for the POE would be in the package.
Overall, the worst part was waiting. The consulate was very busy, most likely due to the fact that yesterday was President's Day and therefore a US holiday for which I'm sure they were closed. Then they were missing a case worker which made things a bit more complicated. But overall, things went very smoothly for us. We are very happy to have all this behind us now!
