Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Our appointment at the USCIS field office in Norfolk, VA was for Adjustment Of Status (I-485), based on marriage after entering the US on a K1 visa in 2017.

We filed AOS in the middle of December 2017, and the interview was 289 days later, a good 9 months wait.

Since I've read many of the reviews here I was even more nervous, because I kept seeing the term "intimidating" in almost all of them. So... expecting the worst we arrived at 8:15, our interview was scheduled for 8:45am.

After passing the security checks and checking in we sat in the waiting area for a little more than an hour. (Man, I was hungry... )

After a felt eternity we got called up and a very friendly male officer (forgot the name, of course), walked us into an office in the back. Another female officer was already waiting there, and it turned out she was his trainer.

First they told us to remain standing, swore us in and had us sit down.

We went through the entire I-485 application, double checked all submitted data, got asked if I work (where, what, since? ) and they took notes about that.
Then we went through all the yes/no questions.

After that, I got asked what I brought for them to support our case. I had an accordion folder with original and copy of everything, as well as my big "immigration binder", where I store duplicates of both K1 and AOS applications. Brought it just in case!

We gave them everything I piled up in this folder (lease contract, joint bank account, life insurance, car insurance, pictures, etc. etc.) and they checked everything and also kept copies of everything we submitted.

While checking the paperwork we got asked when we met, when we got married and where.
It was not pressuring or intimidating at all, more like a semi-serious chitchat. I felt comfortable and not.... "guilty". We were just telling about us and got heard.

After submitting all the stuff the interview was over very quickly, we got a letter saying that we are approved, got informations about the Removal Of Conditions, and yeah.. that was it. I think it took about an hour, but it went by in no time.
The interview was yesterday, the online status of my case is not yet updated, but I got the letter of approval, so I'm not too worried about that.

So, my review for the Norfolk field office is very positive.
I think, if you're a real and genuine couple, have nothing to hide, have your stuff prepared and SORTED and take that serious.... you'll be fine.
It's a very professional and serious, but also very friendly experience. At least it was for us!
