I had my interview on september 4th. My experience with this consulate are quite confusing but smooth in the end.
It started with getting my P3 and scheduling my appointment. I got an email saying to bring the DS-260 confirmation page. After a short reply to the embassy making clear that I filed for DS-160, they corrected their request with a new email.
Getting that appointment was super fast. I only waited for a week to get one. My medical was a week before the interview and the doctor said that the results won't make it on time. So I was expecting AP after the interview anyway.
My appointment was early in the morning at 7:45. Got to the embassy at 7:30 and already entered. They had two lines outside: one for non-immigrant applicants and one for immigrant applicants. K1 is both, so I picked the shorter line.
I only had my smartphone so security was super smooth and quick. The doctor told me to bring the x-ray disc to the interview but security kept it.. I guess discs are not allowed either. I was forwarded to a huge waiting hall with about 30 counters or kiosks. I got a waiting number for immigrant applicants and had to wait for 30 minutes or so until I my number showed up.
At the kiosk the woman took the confirmation page and went through the DS-160 together with me to make sure everything was filled out correctly. She then asked me if I already had my medical and I told her it was a week ago. Finally she wanted to have my fiancees tax return for 2017 which we didn't submit. It clearly said on the P3 checklist that we could submit other evidence of support. I didn't object though, just told her that I didn't have any tax returns.
I was told to take a seat and wait for another kiosk to call me. There the actual interview would take place. So after another 30 minutes (felt like hours) I was called to the interview kiosk.
I had to swear that I told and will tell the truth for everything concerning forms and interview. Fingerprints were taken. I was asked if I wanted to have the interview in german or english and I picked english. She was clearly and american and I was too proud to pick the "easy" way. Though my english is on a pretty high level.
She asked me where we met and apparently "We met only" as we stated in the 129f was not satisfying her. So I explained to her more detailed about MyLanguageExchange and how we got in contact. We didn't provide any information in the 129f so I was really worried.
Other questions were:
When did you start dating?
Has she been to Germany?
Have you been to the US?
How and when did you decide to get married?
When did you propose?
Has anyone of you been married already?
Has anyone of you children?
How old are they?
Have you made travel plans?
Have you made wedding plans?
Will it be a huge ceremony?
So a loooot of questioning but never rude or agressively. She was super nice.
But then the shock: Tax returns for 2017 were missing as well as the medical results. She gave me that 221(g) checklist and told me that I can send the 1040 (tax form) via email. I wasn't saying anything cause arguing with the embassy people seemed like a bad idea.
Entered 7:30
Left 9:30 with that stupid 221g. My fiancee couldn't sleep that night so I texted her about the 1040. We sent that the same day and then the waiting game for the medical started again. It really did turn to AP on the NVC check.
Conclusion: It was smooth but not perfect. They knew before that the tax return was missing and they could have told me in advance. Plus the initial email after P3 asking for the DS-260 was an unnecessary confusion.
Staff was super nice though, from the entrance people to the interview... compared to german staff at other places.
