The Consulate/Embassy reviews were probably some of the most helpful entries I read on VJ so I hope mine can help other couples as much as it helped us!
If you are standing on Boulevard René-Levesque facing the building, it does say SNC Lavalin on it, which confused me a bit. Walk down Rue Saint-Alexandre on the left side of the building and the entrance will have an A-frame sign that says what you cannot bring in. My appointment was at 9AM and I arrived at 8:25AM. There was no line, as I didn't lineup first thing when the embassy opened (I believe 7AM?). Based on all the reviews, I was pretty prepared to wait all morning. I organized all my documentation in an accordion binder and only brought my phone and wallet with me to the interview. I was first given a laminated sheet with a number at the top and a list to organize my documents. After going through security, I was given a small tag to pickup my phone after but was allowed to bring in my wallet.
Next, I walked downstairs, through a hallway and to an elevator up to the 19th floor. They also have a photo booth to take passport photos for $10 if you forgot. Once you get to the 19th floor, prepare to wait! I suggest sitting on the right side of the room when existing the elevator/facing the windows, as the K-1 visas were asked to go to the booths on the right. There were families there for other reasons and they were mostly asked to go to the left. There are also a number of other people there for the K-1 visa, so to pass time, I talked to a few of the others and we shared stories about where in the US we were moving, how we met our fiances, etc. With regards to snacks and drinks, there is a vending machine for both snacks (chips and cookies), and soda that take coins. They do have a water fountain beside the women's bathroom.
First, you will be called to booth 1-5, depending on how many are open, to provide your documentation. Having an accordion binder is the most helpful, so you aren't scrambling to search for your documents when they ask for them. They also asked in a different order than what was on the sheet. This is what I remembered:
1. Proof of payment
2. Passport and photocopy of passport
3. 2 passport sized photos
4. Medical Exam
5. Long-form Birth Certificate and photocopy
6. Original Police Check
7. Supporting documentation for the I-134 (tax documents, w2, paystubs)
8. I-134
9. Original Intent to Marry signed by your fiance
They did not ask me for additional evidence of relationship or copy of DS-160, but I had copies of both just in case. They then ask you for your fingerprints before you go back to more waiting. Your number will be called again, in which they will ask you to go to a booth from number 6-12. The interview was quicker than the collection of my documentation and the woman was extremely friendly which helped calm my nerves! First she asked me to take an oath that all the documentation and everything I say in the interview is true. These are the three questions she asked me:
1. How did I meet my fiance?
2. What does my fiance do for work?
3. Where have I travelled to outside of Canada in the last 5 years?
Then she smiled, said welcome to the United States of America and gave me a pink paper saying my visa was approved! The most rewarding after waiting 2.5 hours! She then explained how my passport would be sent to the Canada Post office I chose when booking my appointment, that I must move within the visa expiration date, and that we must get married within 90 days.
Good luck and don't stress out too much! Everyone that was there for a K-1 visa before me, and myself was approved so stay positive!
