Review of Mumbai interview experience, May 21st 2018
My wife reached the consulate early, at around 6:20. She mentioned that there were already people waiting around that time, and it was hot. So she waited under a tree until the purple shirt guy came out at around 7am. He called out for immigrant visa applicants first. My wife was one of the first people in line, as she crossed the street immediately after she saw him.
After going inside had to go through security. For some reason the scanner at the security checkpoint was malfunctioning and kept detecting CDs for everyone. My wife told him she is not carrying a CD. He checked my wife’s bag and folders, opened all the folders and the sheets, at some point the documents fell down too, so had to rearrange the documents again. Ultimately security guy checked and said no CD, and let my wife go.
Then she was called by the lady at the counter. Questions asked there were:
1. Who's calling you?
2. what's his name?
3. where does he stay?
4. when did you see him last?
5. Have you visited other countries?
6. Where and how long?
The lady also asked for 2017 tax returns.
Later my wife had a meeting with the CO who asked her the following questions.
1. Who is calling you?
2. How did you meet? (Ours was arranged marriage)
3. How do your parents know each other? (met through my wife’s relative)
4. How do your husband’s parents know him? (Family friend)
5. Why did you visit the US in 2016? Where all did you stay?
6. Did you meet him during this time?
7. What does your husband do?
8. Where does he work?
9. Does he stay alone?
10. What is your highest qualification?
After this, he said the magic words. “Visa approvedâ€
My wife was finished and left the consulate by around 8:25am.
Few tips:
1. Good to dress in comfortable clothes, the wait outside is hot.
2. Good to have an unsealed cloth bag which is definitely better than paper or plastic bags etc.
3. Keeping documents handy may not be the best option, it’s best to keep it arranged in a folder, because security people turn things up and down.
4. It totally helps to get in the line early, because the worst part is the waiting.
