Naples, Italy | Review on January 30, 2018: | Italian_in_NYC
Rating: | Review Topic: IR-5 Visa
The usual two-day process at the Naples Consulate for immigrant visas (my mom is a 10-minute walk from the US Consulate in Milan, but immigrant visas for Italy are processed exclusively at the Naples post).
She got there on Sunday late afternoon by high-speed train, checked in at a hotel 5 minutes away (on foot) from the Consulate.
Monday was the medical. Instructions say to be there by 8, however I told her to be there earlier because it's first come-first served. She was there at 6:45, clinic (Istituto Varelli) opened at 7, she was first in line. They checked the Consulate list (they schedule the medical for you for the day before the interview), she was on.
Blood and urine test right away, then chest x-rays.
After that a brief consultation with some personnel (not sure whether they are actual medical doctors), they said no extra vaccinations are required, she proceeded to pay the fee in cash (EUR 220). Then she went in to the doctor, brief visit (checked lungs, heart, blood pressure, stomach, sight) and she was done.
Today was the interview. Appointment was at 9am. She was there at 8:15 but had to wait till 8:45 to get in.
Airport-style security, she had to leave her cell phone in a locker.
She was first called at a window by an Italian employee of the Consulate. Documents were checked. Not all of them, they just wanted to see her birth certificate, the two police certificates and they asked for her marriage certificate (which she didn't have because she's a widower). The employee said that she could email it in if the CO asked for it (spoiler: she didn't). Then her fingerprints were taken.
She then waited for the actual interview with the CO. After a 45-minute wait (a Peruvian national was getting grilled and was having a hard time before her) she was called. A nice and young American CO swore her in and conducted the interview in Italian.
Four question asked:
1. who is [my name]? My son
2. is he married? Yes
3. Do they have kids? Yes, two.
4. What does he do? CPA
"Ok, your visa is approved, you should receive it within a week"
And my mom was on her way. She is flying back to Milan tonight.
CEAC status changed to Administrative Processing (which I think is the norm)
