Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Overall a smooth easy experience. Wasn't sure what to expect since it was the day before Thanksgiving - typically a travel day and "leave work early" day for most. We arrived at 8:30 for 9:00 appointment. 1 person ahead of us as we went thru the airport style x-ray machines. Even had to take my belt off, but shoes on. Waited with 6 or 7 other groups in the first floor waiting room. 8:45 instructed to line up at the front desk to sign in and get a number. Only the applicant can get in line. No one else can wait with them. This caused at least one person some anxiety as they didn't speak English. However, when it was her turn at the sign in desk, her interpreter and petitioner jumped up from the waiting room and helped her get her number. My wife understood enough to get her number herself. He asked her, "are you sure this passport picture is you? You look younger!" Not sure if he meant you look younger in the picture or now, but he was smiling and trying to make small talk. We went in the elevator upstairs to the 2nd floor.

There were a couple of groups in the waiting room from the 8 or 8:30 appointments, plus our 9:00 groups. They called no one for 30 minutes, then 2 people, and then our number around 9:40. The agent asked us to sit in his office. A bit cramped. At least 3 computer monitors on his desk! A lot of folders, notebooks, books all over the place. Looked like he was in there for years! Stood for a pledge to tell the truth. We sat, and he looked at our passports quickly. Asked my wife her name, date of birth and about 10 more questions that are in Part 3 of the I-485 form. Have you ever...been in the communist party, committed a crime, engaged in espionage, involved in torture or killing someone, had military training, and a few others. My wife said later that she didn't understand some of the questions as her English is limited, but quickly figured out he was asking her if she was a bad person, so she just answered, "no". (side note: who would ever answer yes to any of these questions?) Anyways, he then looked thru his file and found our recent marriage certificate since she is here on a K1, looked for divorce certificates, asked how we met while he thumbed thru the papers, looked up and said, "OK, you're approved. You'll get your green card in 2 weeks. It's conditional since you've been married less than 2 years. Any questions for me? No? please leave the office door open on your way out. Happy Thanksgiving." We were back in the car at 10:00. Hope this helps others.
