Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Our AOS interview (from K-1) was scheduled for 11/7/2017 at 11:15 at USCIS Honolulu office. We arrived about 20 minutes early and went through security, checked in, and sat in waiting area. We expected to wait an hour or longer but only had to wait about 30 minutes before being called in. Two other couples were called in about 2 minutes before us; we were fortunate to get Susan Teruya as our IO. She was pleasant and professional; swore us in and asked us to state our names. She asked me (USC) where I worked, my title, and what I do. Asked if I had been to Japan and how many times my spouse and I visited each other before he moved to US. Asked how we met and kept in touch; she was quite intrigued about mobile apps! Asked who does the cooking, then asked what documents we wished to submit to show proof of life together. She hardly asked my spouse anything, which was odd because his English is very good, so I deflected a couple of questions to him to as not to monopolize the conversation. She didn't even ask to see any photos despite the fact we put together a beautiful photo album! I offered a couple of additional documents and she said no need, that she was closing the case and would approve us.

She then immediately asked about my husband's medical exam: it was done in June 2016 and while it was still valid when we submitted our I-485 in November 2016, she wasn't sure if he might need to have another one done since it had been over a year. I said we weren't sure either but had hoped that if they needed a new medical they would have notified us in the interview letter, and I said it was current when we submitted our application and we weren't sure why it took almost a year for USCIS to process it. She said she would ask a supervisor if the need for a new medical could be waived and asked us to return to the waiting room. A few minutes later she came out and told us a new medical was not necessary and that we were approved and congratulated us. Ms. Teruya was very nice and helpful! We got worried though when we didn't receive text/email confirmation later that day...or the next day...but while we were getting malasadas at Leonard's two days later the text and email came through! よかった!!!
