We had SUCH a good experience at our AOS interview! My husband overstayed his visa and we married in February 2016 and filed for an adjustment of status in January of 2017. We did not have a lawyer, I did the applications myself and we prepared for our interview by using these forums. Our interview was on September 28th. While my husband wasn't very nervous, I definitely was! Confident, but also nervous because as all of you know the whole process is nerve-wracking especially with #45 in office.
My husband is from Peru, he speaks Spanish and is very advanced in English, but we did get an interpreter just in case there were a few words he didn't understand. You never know what Immigration Officer you'll have interviewing you so it's always good to be on the safe side. The interpreter informed us that my husband should not speak any English, even if he's comfortable with it, but again it depends on the officer interviewing you.
Our appointment was at 10:15am, we arrived around 9:50am, and we were called back at around 10:40am by Officer Greening. She was very friendly and I immediately felt relieved. When we came into her office she asked to see passports and any ID's. She had the interpreter fill out a form, and while they were doing that she asked to see any evidence proving that my husband and I lived together. I gave the documents that I had, and then she started to look at the 2 huge photo albums that I brought. One was a scrapbook that I had been making since I met my husband, where I kept all of our movie tickets and wristbands, etc and taped them with the corresponding photos. The other album was our wedding/honeymoon album. After that, she informed us we're on camera, and swore us in. She asked all of the questions on the I-485, and during the questioning we even giggled at some of the questions (like the prostitution one). After that, she asked how we met, what we did after meeting. She asked how we communicate, and if I spoke Spanish. This is when I informed her that although I did speak a lot of Spanish (which I learned from him and his family) that he did speak English. She said if he wants to speak English and use the interpreter when needed, it's fine by her. So she asked him why he asked me to marry him, he told her in English.
After just explaining a little about our relationship, she returned our IDs and passport and said she'd have us approved by the end of the week. Well, later that evening the case updated to "My new card is being produced".
Overall, what I thought would be a scary experience turned out to be so smooth and positive. This is such a great office and I am very glad we were interviewed by Officer Greening!
