Our interview was scheduled for 8.15am at the USCIS office in DTLA. My wife & I don't live far from DTLA and planned to arrive about 40 minutes earlier from advice in the reviews on the site.
We parked around the corner at Aiso Street Parking Garage which was $1/hr for the first 2 hours then $3/hr for the next subsequent hour. We weren't thinking it would take more than 2-3hours. The other parking station across from the USCIS building was something like $16 if you don't want to walk another 500 feet. Anyway parking was $5 total, a little over 2 hours.
We arrived around 7.40am and the line outside the building was not too long but was moving.
Remember to not bring any metal objects that might look like weapons. I accidentally had a small folding corkscrew/pocket knife in my bag and they made me walk outside and get rid of it before letting me back in. The pens and markers in my bag were also queried as suspicious (i'm a designer)!? but was allowed to keep. The security officers were frank but stern. We were also allowed to bring in our iPhone's. Some people were even using cell phones for calls whilst waiting. There's a little coffee shop in the foyer and restrooms.
We caught the lift to level 8 and once inside you give your interview notice to the window clerk to confirm appointment and they will tell you to sit down and wait to be called. Our wait was around 30 mins and the interview was about 15 mins.
Once called inside we were sworn in and asked to confirm all pertinent details like date/place of births, parents names, nationality, phone numbers, home address, SSN, dates of entry into the USA.
The general interview was conducted as a conversation and the officer asked my wife and I questions regarding when/where/how we met, how did we keep in touch, did we meet each others parents/friends, have we travelled together. All those questions were supported with photos on our part and travel documents showing flight bookings and receipts.
The officer asked for joint financials like account details, leases and insurances to which we didn't have many of and we simply explained that because i'd only just arrived that we are still building joint documents to which she understood and seemed satisfied with our answer.
Personally i know they have all the details (from all the applications process) and are just verifying it is consistent and true. Our case folder looked about 4 inches thick so if there was anything we missed i'm sure they would have asked about. The officer was happy with us and approved us on the spot.
As we were about to travel within a month they stamped my passport with an I-551 notice in case i didn't get the actual Green Card in the mail before leaving.
They explained the 2 year conditional status and to apply to lift conditions within 90 days of expiry.
Overall it was fairly smooth and straightforward. As long as you breath and answer truthfully you will be fine. Wishing everyone else a smooth process!
