I'm a UK citizen and my same sex partner is a US citizen. We went to the LA USCIS office in downtown for our interview early Feb. We were prepared with a ton of documents. There weren't that many couples there - it was mid afternoon and I guess there were 5 or 6 other couples apart from us in the very large waiting area. We breezed through the airport style security so make sure you only carry what you need and you may need to remove your shoes.
Our lawyer turned up 15 minutes before we were called in. The IO shouted out my name (mispronounced) and looked at me and my partner really sternly. It made us both feel uncomfortable, and even our lawyer was taken aback.
The interview was really very basic and lasted for maybe 30 minutes but the lady was very stern and made us feel like naughty schoolchildren before the headmistress. My hands were shaking a little as I gave her my docs (rental, insurance, various utility bills, all nicely highlighted) and I had made my copies but she very gruffly said she didn't want any.
Then she took copies of our passports and driving licences and came back. She didn't look at me at all but gave a letter to my partner which said our case would be held for review pending background checks. He said she smiled at that point but I was feeling so miserable that I didn't notice anything.
I came out of that interview a bit shocked to be honest. Not what I expected at all given the reviews here. I felt like crying. After all our hard work!
Anyway, we must have done something right because I got my green card two weeks later. So I should really go and kiss the lady IO. She's very good at her job. She can put the fear of God into you so I would say come well prepared. I am giving a 5 because everything turned out well in the end but it was a scary experience.
