The whole process was made really easy by the embassy. After they get the application from the NVC, they contacted my fiancee (the petitioner) by email with the instructions on how to set up an appointment. After paying the fee, sending the DS-160 confirmation and doing more paperwork, they scheduled our appointment for 30 days after.
My appointment was at 1pm and I showed up at noon, but they don't let you in to the embassy grounds until 12:50. You can't bring any electronics or even the CD with the xrays from the medical that you supposedly needed. Try to only bring the documents and maybe one book to wait. We went up the hill, through security and then to a room where they hand you a number. I waited for maybe 30 minutes and was then called to take my fingerprints, give my passport and other documents. They also asked if there was any other evidence I wanted to add to the application. After they did that with the rest of the k1 applicants, we waited to be called by our names to a window where the interview would take place. The lady was super nice and the whole thing lasted maybe 5 minutes tops. She didn't bat an eye at the fact we are a lesbian couple and just asked about our plans, how we met and about our dog. It was more like we were gushing about the engagement. I seriously would have worried way less had I known how chill the whole thing was. After about 5 minutes of talking she told me we got approved and would get our visa in 1-2 weeks.
