My wife went for her interview on Jan 10, 2017 and said it was a really good experience.
Her appointment was for 9:30am. She arrived at the embassy around 8:50 and like most, had to wait outside because she was there early. Luckily it was breezy and not too hot outside.
A little after 9:00, she was called and went through security after a little bit of a queue there.
After going through a bit of a queue in the security line (maybe 10 mins), she made her way into the embassy, took a number, and waited to be called. She said she waited about 20-30 mins and had the document check with a younger local guy who she said was very nice. My wife is Japanese and I was a bit concerned if the Singapore embassy staff would know about the Japanese family registry documents (Koseki Shohon). But luckily they were familiar and accepted them without issue. The only problem was that our lawyer made copies for us and the entire document wasn't copied (the Japanese docs are A4 size and the US lawyers copied with smaller Letter size paper.) It wasn’t a big deal as they were able to make copies for her for about 5 SGD.
Although she took tons of documentation, pictures, etc, the only things he asked for was her passport, 2 2x2 photos, the original and copies of the marriage, divorce, and birth docs. He also asked her just a few easy questions:
1. Had ever of us had been married before?
2. Do either of us have children?
3. When are we planning to move to the states?
4. Asked if she held an employment pass in Singapore.
There were also some concerns around her medical results. She did her medical on on Dec 21 and because I hadn't seen the CEAC status update, I was worried that they didn't send the results to the embassy. We called the medical office on Thursday of the prior week and they said that they were going to deliver the results by hand to the embassy on Friday. Given that it was such a long time and it was over the holidays, I was still concerned that they either lost the results or didn’t deliver them on Friday as they promised. As the guy looked for her results, he couldn't find them in the normal location. Luckily after a bit of looking around at the embassy, he found the results in a different location. Thank goodness!
She then sat back down and waited maybe 15-20 minutes for the American CO. He called her over and she said he was super nice and they had a really great conversation. He asked her the following questions after getting sworn in:
1. How did we meet
2. If she had ever been married before
3. If she has any children
4. If she was divorced and when she was divorced
5. The date we were married
6. How long we’ve both been in Singapore
7. If we both work in Singapore
8. Has she ever been to the states before. She said yes.. last time in June for 2 weeks. He asked if she had been there prior for a longer period of time. She had for school many years ago and stayed for 2 years.
9. He asked when we expected to move to the states
While she answered, he was entering things into the computer. This was most likely around 9:50 am. I was checking the CEAC status occasionally after she went into the embassy and it updated to today's date around that time.
She asked a few questions and wanted to know if he wanted any extra documentation. The NVC told us to bring another original copy of the I-864 form as well as my W2’s (which didn’t exist because I haven’t worked in the US since I’ve been in Singapore). We had a letter explaining as well as my pay stubs from Singapore, IRAS tax docs, etc. He said that he didn’t need any of that because they knew that I worked in Singapore… and he mentioned that the NVC has a default checklist that they use.
Towards the end of the interview, he said that they would need to do a final review of the documents and they would let her know if they needed anything else. If they did need something else, he asked her to make sure that she follows up within a week so that we wouldn’t be too delayed and could meet our scheduled move date of Feb 15. They kept her passport which was a great sign. Oh, and they did fingerprint her as part of the process too.
This part of the immigration process was quick and easy. And as of today (2 days after the interview), the visa has been issued and we expect to have her passport back in a few days!
