I, the petitioner, attended the interview with my fiance at the U.S. Embassy of Cambodia. After reading lots of different experiences and mostly negative ones at this embassy, we feared only the worst, a rejection of our petition.
Once we entered the embassy, went through security, we entered the waiting area, which appeared like a DMV. Next, an announcement was made for us to wait in line at window 7 to get a number. We were the very first one to enter the embassy and the very first one to be called to hand over our paperwork at window 9. The consulate officer collecting the paperwork asked some questions as well to verify our identifications. I was allowed to join my fiance to hand over the paperwork while she answered questions. Questions included her home address and my phone number.
After waiting for another 15 minutes, my fiance was called to window 2 for her fingerprint. She went to wash her hands in the restroom before getting fingerprinted. It was a quick process.
We needed to wait a while before my fiance was called for her interview. I believe it was about 30 minutes after getting her fingerprint. Then her number was called. I can feel that she was a bit nervous. I was also nervous. She was called to window 4 for her interview. I can hear the consulate officer asking her if I, her fiance, accompanied her to the interview. After she acknowledged to him, he requested to have me join her for the interview. My fiance came to get me from the waiting area to join her. The consulate officer was friendly and asked us questions that we prepared for. I can't recall the total amount of random questions he asked, might have been about 10 to my fiance and around 5 to me while looking through our documents. He didn't ask the same questions to the both of us, but wanted us to confirm the details we provided in our petition. My fiance did a very good job answering all questions to the best of her ability and I did my part.
After answering random questions, I saw my fiance's eyes enlarged with happiness. She was so happy because she saw the consulate officer pulled out a blue slip and noted the pick up time of her visa. He showed the blue slip to my fiance and told her to come back on December 30 to pick up her passport and visa. Once he handed back all of our paperwork and the blue slip, we were so thrilled leaving the embassy with a successful interview.
Overall, we had a great experience with the whole process at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh. Of course it did not come without anxiety, but we were so relieved to learn of our approval. We felt confident about the interview and had great interactions will all consulate officers. We were business smart clothing and looked professional. We noticed that many people did not dressed the part, felt underdressed.
One of the best things you can do as a petitioner is be there in person at the interview with your fiance, especially in Cambodia. I totally recommend this. It will give you a greater chance of being approved. It's a great indication of your relationship and support of your fiance.
This is our timeline of how our successful day went:
6:00am: Arrived at the embassy and were the first ones in line. People slowly started to line up behind us after 10 minutes.
7:00am: Security personnel gave us an announcement of the process. They will allow entry according to the appointment time. My assumption was that everyone who were lining up had a 7:30am appointment.
7:15: The window opens and the security personnel asked to see our passports.
7:30: We ligned up at window 7 to get our number
7:45: My fiance was called to window 9 to hand over paperwork, they asked me to join and help her
8:30: My fiance was called to window 2 for her fingerprint
9:00: My fiance was called to window 4 for her interview, I also joined the interview
9:30: Interview approved
Thank you VisaJourney community for all your help. We would have not been successful without the support of the community. Best of luck to everyone going through the K-1 Fiance Process. It's one of the most difficult things I've had to go through in my life, but let me tell you that it's all worth it. If she is worth it, then you've got to put your heart and soul into the process. Love knows no limits.
