I am truly pleased with the efficiency and all around courtesy I experienced at Hartford Field Office 2 days ago.
I am the beneficiary and my husband is the petitioner, a USC. My husband and I arrived at the Hartford office at 10:17am for our 11am AOS interview. We never got into the building to check in until 10:53 due to a large amount of people and only 2 security officers on duty. We checked in and the friendly receptionist asked if we had any documents to submit for proof. I was a bit surprised since I expected to present proof while with the officer. I handed all of the copies that we had made and she asked us to have a seat.
After approximately 45 minutes of waiting we were called by our surnames by a stern looking albeit pleasant gentleman who ushered us to his office. He then swore us in and proceeded to ask my husband his name, birthdate and address. He then asked him what my name and birth date was. Then proceeded to take information from I130 and ask questions including what the status of his former wide was since my husband was previously married and applied for AOS for her successfully years ago. He then asked my husband who helped us fill out our paperwork, where was i born and to name our children.
Afterwards, he questioned me....name,birthdate, place of birth, names and birthdates of our children, address, husband's name. He then asked me if I had visas before my last overstay and I said yes....i had 2 10 year visas and a student's visa. He asked if I had an overstay prior to the one on my current I94. I said not to my knowledge and then explained to him that after graduation I was pregnant and decided to stay here to give birth to my daughter. I was not sure if that was considered on overstay seeing that I had finished my degree so technically the purpose of student's visa was now fulfilled. I did not want to lie and say no so i said I am not sure and explained myself. He then said that everything looks good but he can not approve me because he needs to confirm that I did not have an over stay on a previous visa since I did not have my old passport to show my entires from 1985 which is when my 1st visa was issued. He also stated that it take 1 hour or take 1 week.
We left disappointed but understood the logic. However, 2 hours later i received an update stating that card is being produced and an additional 2 hours later that my case was approved.
In my opinion our IO was thorough, straight forward but in no way menacing or aggressive. It did not feel like an interrogation....was more like I met someone and they wanted to know more about my husband and I.nI am eternally grateful for this experience and truly wish the best for all others seeking immigration benefits with good intentions.
