THE MEDICAL EXAM
First, we chose La Quinta Inn because the price seemed the best and they have a swimming pool (it was really hot and humid when we left our apartment and that seemed like a good idea). The hotel is mostly good, but somewhat disorganized but nothing we are not already used to from being in Mexico. We are at the pool now writing this and it’s beautiful here-both the weather and the pool area. I felt having a pool could be a stress reducer and it has been. We actually like C. Juarez so far!
La Quinta has a shuttle that runs frequently from the hotel and you can contact the hotel from, say, the mall and the shuttle will meet you out front to return to the hotel. But, we found out, if the shuttle is making an airport trip, that takes longer, and it might not be available for a while. Plan accordingly. We have mostly walked to the mall and consulate area-it takes 25 mins. The shuttle will take you TO the airport but told us they don’t pick up FROM the airport. It’s also possible to take a taxi and I think the hotel will help you to contact one. We just prefer to walk-which also means we are not depending on anyone else to get us there.
We just finished the medical-here is how it went. First, BEWARE OF THE SHOPS CLAIMING TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR PAPERS. There are at least four of them and they go as far as claiming they can “guarantee a 601 waiver”. It seems the US would make the warnings about this more clear. We met some people here who didn’t know about this problem. Apparently once they get some of your papers you have to pay to get them back.
So his appointment was for tomorrow at Medicos de la Frontera but we decided to go today instead and that wasn’t a problem at all. It seems they make appointments but don’t really keep them as others have said. They are most likely just competing for your business. We went around 1030 AM because we are not in a rush to have the results. Medicos de la Frontera was an older, white building with blue trim and was the one furthest back from the main road (Paseo de la Victoria). The other two buildings looked more modern and seemed to have the same name (Medicos Internacional). I’m not sure where the third medical building was. All of the medicos were near the white pedestrian bridge that goes over the highway-you can’t miss it. Mos, (all?) of the medical places offer van service to get your business. Vans are at our hotel a few times a day.
Once we arrived they took his papers (only the passport and the letter that was “Packet 3”-the one that says you need to have this paper to have your interview). In our case they didn’t take the emails that confirmed our medical or ASC appointment or payments for the medical appointment. But to be sure you should bring both-maybe they glanced at them. Then they took a photo and I was told I could not stay in the same sala so I waited outside (in the front there are tables in the shade). There are a few small food places near here too.
After the photo he was given back his documents and went to radiology and got a chest x-ray. Then he had blood drawn in another room-then to another room for temperature, height and weight. In another room he was given a paper robe and waited for the doctor to examine him. They took his BP, examined his whole body I guess for tattoos (but didn’t use the light). He was asked a few questions about drug use and alcohol use-none of which was a problem because we don’t use anything. In his case the doctor did not push him at all as I have heard others say. He said no and that was it.
They never took his vaccination record probably because he reminded each person he wasn’t having vaccinations.
He was done in about an hour or possibly less-mostly because it was almost empty by the time we went in.
We attempted to eat at Denny’s thinking they could handle getting a breakfast to us but even this was difficult for them. The service was so bad that we left without ever being waited on. Instead we went to La Barriga, which is a few stores away. Here we had real Mexican food, and excellent service. Our food arrived in less time than we spent sitting in Denny’s hoping someone would wait on us. I highly recommend La Barriga. It’s our third time eating there. So far everything was excellent especially the soup Caldo Xochitl.
We picked up the results at 1:30 without a problem. He was also given a CD with the results but we don’t know yet what this is for.
Everyone involved with the medical was friendly and helpful.
We will post about the visa interview when it’s done.
