My fiancé sent in the petition in January 2015, and on 8 March 2016 I finally had my interview. We arrived at 12, saw that there was nobody there, went into Sandton City for about 30 minutes and when we got back to the embassy there was about 12 people lined up. (They turned out the be groups, so I ended up being fifth in line). I also read somewhere that they don't allow queueing before 12:30, so in that case, just hang around and then run up to the benches when it's time haha.
My sister accompanied me, and I asked if she will be allowed inside and they said yes. We got into the security room and there they had a bit of an issue with her being there, but let her through. Once inside, I received a number and was told to sit and wait. After about 15 minutes a lady came up to us and told my sister that she needed to leave. I thought that was really weird and unnecessary, but oh well.
Finally my number was called and I was asked to hand in my police clearance certificate, my unabridged birth certificate, my affidavit of support and relationship evidence. I was then told to pay the visa fee at the cashier. While waiting to pay, my number got called for finger printing so I went to do that first, and then came back to pay.
Then I waited probably about an hour before I got called to the window for my interview. I didn't really like the fact that the interviews are held right there at the windows for everyone to hear, but that's just me. I'm a very private person. My interview was done by a very friendly American man, and he asked a few simple questions:
1) When is the big day?
2) Tell me a little bit about how you guys met and how you knew he was the one?
3) Has he been to South Africa?
4) Have you met his family?
Then he handed me back my relationship evidence photos and my birth certificate and told me that my passport will be ready for collection in 7-10 working days (that part freaked me out, because everywhere else I've read 2-3 days) and that I will also receive a sealed envelope that I need to take with me when I travel to the USA. He then congratulated me and I was off.
It was much less scary than I expected - I was stressed to death for nothing. It all took probably around 2.5 hours from start to finish.
Now I am waiting on my passport, and hopefully it will be ready before March 15th because that's when my plane ticket is booked for! Will update this when I receive it!
