Interview was scheduled for 8am on the 3/9/2016. I arrived at 7.30am and went through security and checked in. Around 8.05am I was called for my appointment.
I was asked to raise my hand and swear that I would tell the truth. I then sat down and was asked for my drivers license, Green card, appointment letter and passport The interviewer was very pleasant and made it feel almost like a formality. He explained he was going to go over the application then do the written, reading and civics test.
He went through the application, checking my name, D.o.b, wife's name, her ex husbands, name, my kids and step kids names and my address. He then went through the checklist of questions such as am I a habitual drunkard etc. Then asked me when I left the country on vacation. We chatted about Mexico and he said he had been to Cancun and despite him being Mexican American, barely had to speak Spanish as everyone wanted to talk English.
He then asked me to read the second line from 3 potential lines. I think it said George Washington was our first president. He then asked me to write a sentence, similar to the line above.
For the civics tests he asked: When was the constitution written, what ocean is on the East Coast, What state borders Canada, how many senators are there, what is freedom of religion, who has to register for select service.
He then said I had passed and offered me an oath ceremony at 1pm the same day. I couldn't do it that day as I had work and have an upcoming vacation in 4 weeks abroad and so was worried about getting a US passport on time. He said not to worry and he'd request for me not to have my oath ceremony until after my vacation and to use my UK passport and green card until then but that I wouldn't be quite a US citizen until the oath.
My interview was based on 3 years of marriage. I was not asked to show any other evidence other than what I had submitted (tax returns, joint bank accounts, insurance, previous trips etc). The officer said this was because we had a child together and he had a copy of the birth certificate but that if we didn't have a child together he'd probably have asked for other evidence.
The officer was very polite, very reassuring and helpful with any questions I had for him. The interview lasted about 15/20 minutes and I was given a piece of paper confirming the citizenship recommendation. Very positive experience!
