Greetings Fellow VJer's,
What a day!
My Wife's K-1 AOS Interview was scheduled for 08:05 and her Daughter was for 08:55.
The instructions say to arrive no more than 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment which I would agree with as they have interviews all day and that appears to manage the waiting room population.
We met with our interpreter and entered the building about 07:45 and got into the security Q which had about 10 people in front of us. Security was efficient and the team courteous to all you passed through.
It also advises if your spouse does not speak fluent English - please provide a native language interpreter. My Natasha's English is fair and she was able to get through the Consular Interview but it speeds the question and answer process quite well. We did find a great Russian interpreter and we flew through the questions.
We were called at 08:40 and when the IO realized Natasha's daughter was scheduled as well she decided to interview the both of them together which definitely sped up the entire process. After swearing us in our IO wanted to see originals of our marriage license, birth certificates and previous divorces. As she reviewed them she asked relevant dates and general questions about them. She was impressed we had copies of everything she asked for ready to give her. She asked about our children, ages, where they live now, if they are married, any support payments. It is clear she knew the answers before she asked them and we were nothing but totally honest about everything. She then asked a few questions about how and when we met, whether either Natasha or her daughter had ever applied for a visa before, been denied, ever been to the USA in the past. She then wanted to see joint bank accounts, leases, loans and anything we had together with both our names on it. She asked Natasha about when and where they entered the US (POE) and who met them at the airport.
Our IO was very efficient and stayed on task. It is clear they have to make an immigration judgement in a matter of a few minutes and ensure we have a real loving relationship worth a chance. She softened a little and asked for a few photos to include in our file.
She then proceeded to ask them both face to face the questions they answered when we completed the online Consulate visa application before the K-1 interview.
She then said I am going to approve you today and explained exactly what that meant immediately and what we have to do 90 days before the conditional permanent resident expires. She handed us Approval letters and said the green cards should arrive in about 3 weeks and if we need a passport stamped for emergency travel we can proceed tot the first floor office and ask if it was possible. Natasha's daughter has wanted to return home for some time and with the spring semester fast approaching she wanted to go and return without impacting her English schooling too much. We thanked our IO and when to the first floor office.
I asked if the I-551 passport stamp was possible but we were told it is available but only for bona-fide emergency situation so we were denied as missing a few days of college is no considered an emergency.
We walked outside in the cool morning sun at 09:30 and it finally sunk in that we were APPROVED and we celebrated with our interpreter.
Since we were in the LA area we decided to do some sightseeing and when we returned home this evening the Case Status page on the USCIS Website had been changed already to:
"New Card Is Being Produced - On January 14, 2016, we ordered your new card for Receipt Number MSCXXXXXXXXXX, and will mail it to the address you gave us. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address."
How cool is that!
We had a few things that could have been red flags but we were totally honest and up front about absolutely everything and the results speak for themselves.
Good Luck everyone!
Tony&Natasha
