Ombeni's appointment was for 10 am yesterday. He got there on time and was told that they hadn't received some of the papers he had mailed to them. So he was given the forms and a half hour to complete them. He took a taxi to some place that was known for helping people fill out visa forms, paid a bunch for the help (and the taxi rides), and returned to the embassy presumably much later than a half hour. They scheduled him for the last time slot of the day.
His interview lasted around 45 minutes. Ombeni wasn't too specific on the questions that they asked, but they did ask about how we met, how many times I had visited him, and what I did for a living in America. They looked at the pictures he brought and the financial information, but not at our (very impressive) phone bills, emails, or letters and envelopes. They gave him a claim ticket to come back today for his passport and visa. They told him if it wasn't ready today, it would be ready Thursday, and if not Thursday, then Friday.
He came back to the embassy today. Most people were receiving their visas in front of the building, but he was called inside and told to wait. He didn't mention how long he waited, but eventually they called him back and asked him a few more questions to verify that he does indeed love me and we will indeed get married. smile.gif
So now he has his visa! I feel very grateful that the embassy in Tanzania is fairly relaxed and allowed him to reschedule for later the same day. I also feel grateful that they didn't care about my lack of employment history (I've been employed 3 months, and we don't have a co-sponsor).
The American Embassy in Dar es Salaam is a good example of how an embassy SHOULD be run. Quick delivery of Packet 3, easy online appointment scheduling, and compassionate staff members. Granted, immigration/visa fraud is comparatively low in Tanzania, but the embassy suffered (and bounced back) from the terrorist attacks in 1998. Kudos to the embassy in Dar.
