New Orleans LA | Review on April 3, 2015: | davidls88
Rating: | Review Topic: Adjustment of Status
I came to the US on a student visa, and graduated from college. Shortly before I got on OPT, I met my wife. We got married on November 28, 2014 and filed for AOS on December 7 or so.
To our great surprise, I received my EAD shortly after the usual 3-months timeframe AND our interview was also scheduled on March 30, 2015.
The appointment was at 9:30, in New Orleans LA. There is a parking lot right next to the building (a little expensive, but worth it).
We got through security. The guards were stern and grumpy for a Monday morning I guess. We were told to slip in a tray our appointment schedule letter and take a seat, which we did.
Then the wait started. After an hour, I noticed that a man that came right before us was called in so we were hopeful that our turn would be next. Boy was I wrong! I noticed that a few more couples that came AFTER us were being called in. I voiced my concern to my wife, and a guy sitting next to us overheard us talking. He said that he had to get up and talk to the officer behind the glass window as they have also been waiting for a while (+2 hours). It turned out that they misplaced his wife's paper, but then immediately arranged for her to be called in next.
Therefore I got up and talked to an IO that was walking around. He asked for my name, appointment time, and alien #. He was very nice. After 10 minutes, he came back and apologized for the delay and said I should expect to be called in the next 10 minutes. Sure enough, that's what happened and my wife and I got up and followed the immigration officer. She was white, in her middle or late 30s. She directed us to her office. She swore us in and apologized for the delay again. She said that someone had taken our case but then somehow was just reassigned to her.
She asked basic questions about the information we put on the application forms. She then asked how we met, and how did the relationship progress. I was ready to launch into a very long story but it did not seem like she had time for it. Therefore my wife and I kept it short. She then asked if we had any document evidence to add to our file, to which we replied with a stack of papers: insurance (car, engagement ring, renters), lease, utility bill, phone bill, credit card, bank account, affidavits, joint tax return, etc...
She took a quick look at our wedding photo album. And that was it! She said that everything looked good and that she could approve us on the spot. She explained the 2-years conditional green card period and what we would have to do. She said it would be mailed to me within 2 weeks or so. She then escorted us back. We were so relieved and so excited about not having any restrictions anymore. I hope this review helps someone. Good luck and don't give up!
