Straightforward interview with friendly staff today. A few points to add to previous reviews:
- The security screening/x-ray area on level 10 is small, and they only process one person through the x-ray at a time. Myself and half a dozen other people waited in line for what felt like forever behind a guy struggling with a massive tangle of cables, and then going through all of his documents multiple times trying to find the chest x-ray CD (because you can't take that up to the consulate with you). So please, for everyone's sake, don't take a lot of electronics with you if you can avoid it, and BE ORGANISED
- The security staff on level 10 really appreciate it if you don't have a lot of stuff with you. I just had my documents, wallet, and keys, and they actually thanked me for making it easy by not having a phone or bag.
- After security but still on level 10 I had my interview letter and document checklist reviewed by one of two girls. I had submitted photocopies of my civil docs to NVC, and had the originals with me as requested. The girl told me to go and get a photocopy of each of these documents, despite me telling her that they would have copies upstairs. There is a place on level 10 that does photocopies, passport photos, and sells the Express Post envelopes, in case you forgot any of that stuff. But you then have to go back through the x-ray again when you come back from that. And of course when I submitted my documents upstairs they immediately handed me back the brand new photocopies, as they had copies in my file!
- Everything else is as per other reviews: wait for the lift to level 59; hand passport to guy at security (and admire view through window behind him); get buzzed through heavy door into the consulate proper; take ticket; get called to window to hand over documents, have fingerprints taken and stand in silence watching them review file; get called to different window for interview
- The lady interviewing me was very friendly and just asked some pretty basic questions - why my wife wasn't with me, how long we had been living in Australia, how long my wife had been back in the US, how we met, where we were planning to live, what we were planning to do for work.
