Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

It took us around 15 minutes to wait in line outside the CIS office. The walk through security was similar to an international airport. We were directed to go upstairs to the second floor and shuffled in at about 8:10, about 25 minutes early. We were surprised that some of the other applicants dressed rather casually. We were both dressed formally just short of a tie but still with the shiny shoes. We were told to wait for the letter F door to call us in. We huddled together like two small children wet in the rain. We were stressed! The previous applicants from F came out worried, holding a paper that signifies that their case was to be reviewed (or worse). The attorney that came with them I guess wasn't that helpful. We waited another 15 minutes and our IO came out and politely ushered us in. We sat together but were separated and something between us made it hard to see the other. I think this was to prevent us from signaling to each other through body language. She had clearly looked at our cases first and I think she had already made up her mind to approve us. She didn't even look at our paperwork. She only asked my wife's parents name and oddly I spelled out her fathers name like I was at a spelling bee. It was weird!
Then she asked me if my wife was just married me for the green card. I said no.
She asked if we wanted kids and we both said, no. Then questioned me about our different religions as my wife's last name is Muslim. She was Catholic and her father was a lay minister. She only briefly looked at our paperwork, an her eyebrows raised when she saw my Power of Attorney documents and my will. Nothing says trust like cash! I commingled a considerable amount and had other documents that pointed to my slave like confidence in my mate. We were approved after about 5 minutes in her office. She shook hands with us and we walked out a bit dazed. We even almost past the exit door even though it had a big exit sign on it. A little embarrassing. I was elated we had done everything right and did it without an attorney. The next day our case was updated as card produced online. I advise anyone going through this process to get your proof early and build your case. You are your best advocate!
