Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

Hi, I would like to share my experience of my IR-1 interview at the US embassy in Jakarta today March 3, 2015.

My interview was scheduled at 12.30 p.m. so my husband and I came to the embassy at around 12 by bajaj from Maxone Hotel. There were 3 other immigrant visa applicants lining up outside the embassy.

When we arrived, the security guard greeted us so friendly. She smiled and asked me where I got my batik dress I was wearing. :D

Then, I explained to her that I had an immigrant interview and that my husband wanted to join me. She said yes right away. She even didn't bother asking me to show her the email my husband sent to the embassy (The email stated that he was allowed to accompany me during the interview). She also explained to the other security guard that my husband is a US citizen and he would like to join me in the interview. She was simply so cool, helpful, and friendly.

At around 12.20, we entered the front building and had security screening. All gadgets should be left there.

Next, we headed to the consular building. At 12.30 the lady at window 5 started calling the immigrant applicants and asking for the required documents.

My experience with the lady at window 5 was pleasant. She asked for my passports and my medical check up result. Also, she gave me back a bundle of my documents I sent to the USCIS and NVC and an orange brochure about domestic violence. She asked me to read the brochure while waiting. Nothing to complain about. People say that she is not too friendly but I think she just does her job efficiently. In fact, she laughed when I told her that my photograph looked so ugly.:D I think she agreed.

After that, this was my least favorite part of the interview.
I had to wait 3.5 hours for my actual interview! I was the last applicant. Each immigrant interview took about 15-25 minutes. There were 4 interviews before me. Besides, the room was so cold and the rain outside made it even colder. It was kind of boring and tiring duh! So my husband and I killed the time reading magazines and doing a little bit of yoga. LOL. because no one else was in the room. Even the staff was away from their windows and we needed stretching so badly.

And finally my interview turn came up!
My husband and I went to the room 1.
Room 1 is a small room in the corner. It looks like a closet with a big glass separating the interviewer from us.

The interviewer was a beautiful American lady who was in her 30's.
She was so nice although I could see that she was a bit tired just like me and my husband.

Most of the time, she reviewed my documents and typed on the computer.
She also asked us to read the orange brochure about domestic violence while she was typing.
Overall, not too many questions were asked.
She only asked me questions such as
1. Why I want to move to the U.S
2. What I did in the US before ( I was a student)
3. Where I met my husband (in Indiana)
4. If we both work for the same company (yes)
She also asked my husband some questions such as
1. how long he has lived in Indonesia (3 years)
2. What his parents (our joint sponsor) do in the states
3. if his mother and father live together (yes)

My husband was actually not required to go but the embassy let him accompany me all the way including joining me in the interview itself. In fact, he communicated with the interviewer more that I did.
If your spouse would like to join you in the interview, just e-mail the embassy to let them know.

After that, the interviewer gave us blue paper saying "Congratulations. Your U.S visa immigrant visa has been approved."

I couldn't feel anything that time. I just couldn't believe it was real. It felt like I was dreaming.

But now as I am typing this, I feel so grateful that my long wait is over.I am so happy. Now, we are ready to have our new life in the States.

So it is my experience with the US embassy in Jakarta.
I would give it 5 for the rating but the wait was so long and the room was so cold, so I gave it 4. But overall, it was nice and easy.

Thanks!
