I am the petitioner from the USA. I accompanied my fiancee' to the embassy in KL, Malaysia for the interview day. We arrived about 45 minutes early to deliver our paperwork in the morning and the very nice guard outside greeted us and directed us to the window. The man behind the window gave my fiancee a badge and allowed her to enter immediately even though we were quite early. I sat outside in a shady area and talked with people -- most of whom were nervous. My fiancee waited inside in the air conditioned area until someone called for her. They examined her paperwork and said there might be a problem because my old divorce decree from the USA did not have an embossed stamp showing it was "certified." I thought I had sent the correct one -- I was wrong. After about 45 minutes, she came out and we went back to the hotel to wait till it was time to go back for the 1:30 PM interview. We stayed at the Istana Hotel which is about a 5 or 10 minute taxi ride. I know there is at least one closer hotel, but we have always liked the Istana and their room rates are very good.
We arrived early for the afternoon interview and were once again allowed to come in a bit early. We went through security screening and were instructed to turn off mobile phones. We waited in the interview waiting area and chatted with others. The interview rooms were along the back and side wall and were sort of like glass cubicles. Each had a big glass door and a counter that sort of looked like a bank window with glass. The officer was behind his window. Eventually, our number was called and the sign told which cubicle to enter. My fiancee went in and I moved to the closest chair to that room so that I could see what was going on and that the officer would see that I was there with her. She took an oath to tell the truth and then the very kind officer (and American) begin examining our documents and asking a few questions. Most questions were about how we first met, when did we get engaged, what were my children's names, ages and jobs. Then he explained to her that everything looked great, but my old divorce decree did not have the my divorce decree did not have an embossed stamp on it showing it was an original certified copy. She started to cry and he waved at me to come in. He was so very nice and kind and assured her several times that she would get the visa as soon as the certified copy was brought. I told him that as soon as I got back to the USA, I would FedEx the document to her (I was not allowed to send it directly to the embassy). He said for her email the embassy when she had the document and make an appointment. He said the return appointment would be made very quickly...no long waiting like we had to wait for the interview. He said he was very impressed with our proof of relationship documentation and had no doubt at all that we were a real couple. He also said that many many people come in without good proof and with other paperwork problems and are rejected.
