Interview was today, I was so nervous beforehand that I made myself physically sick. I was terrified I would have missed out one critical piece of paperwork that would have me denied a visa.
Well, my appointment was at 9:30am. I arrived just before 9. Going through security, I had to get my bag scanned, turn cellphone off (and my kindle - hint, take physical reading material!) and locked away. Security let me in and directed me to window 5 (the only window for immigrant visas)
At window 5, I met B who is as lovely in person as she is on the phone and by email (I'd had to communicate with them a LOT!).
B checked my paperwork, requesting originals of my marriage certificate, passports, and a courier bag. I made the mistake of taking a NON-signature required bag. Remember to get the signature required one if you're not picking it up! Not a huge problem though, B advised me to go downstairs and get a new courier bag (NZ post is on the ground floor - and apparently it's very common for people to forget the courier bag!). Anyway, B took my fingerprints and had me check to make sure she entered all the data correctly on the computer.
Here comes the worst part. Waiting. There's not really any reading material, the TV just plays CNN on silent with no subtitles, and it's terrifying watching all the non-immigrant visa people get through their interviews. I swear, most of the non-immigrant guys were grilled harder than I was!
After waiting for about an hour and a half, I was called up to the window. The gentleman asked me some questions:
Where and when did I meet my husband (to which I explained that we met online before meeting in person, as well as mentioning some of the circumstances under which we married).
When he proposed was it a surprise, how did I react?
Had I met his family?
Had he ever come to New Zealand?
What does he do in the USA?
Where does he live?
What do I plan to do over there (I mentioned obviously I was going to be with him, after which I would look for work in my field).
Then he said he would be having me swear an oath and taking some fingerprints. He said he could look at all the evidence is brought in if I wanted, but it was already approved so it's not really necessary. He said my answers made sense and there was nothing suspicious. He took my passport and said I'd receive it by courier in a few days!
