Advice… arrive as early as possible. I got there at 7 am and there were 6 people in front of me, some being families, who take a lot of time to process throughout the different stages. Once the applicants arrived, a pleasant guard segregated the immigrant from non-immigrant visas. Benches were provided outside, down a covered area; only the applicant was allowed into the building while loved ones waited patiently outside. At 7:30 the external kiosk was manned by a local lady, who checked each person by letter with passport. You were then ushered to another line where in twos you were allowed in for security checking, mobiles handed over and a receipt given. In groups you were assembled in that building for 5 minutes then ushered across an internal courtyard into the visa processing building. On entry, each applicant was given two tickets with a number on it. You maintained this number throughout the process and were called up on that number.
We were seated at the far end of a long room in a very tight seating arrangement. At about 8 am, 3 kiosks were manned and applicants were called forward to check through paperwork. This took approx. 10 min but families were a lot longer. Documents checked at that point. 3 ladies were pleasant, efficient and patiently worked through the paperwork in front of you. Originals were returned to me. You were then directed to the end window where you were told to go for fingerprinting under the same number. The gentleman was impersonal and business-like; clearly the repetitive process of fingerprinting had, over time, dulled his sense of humour or amiability. Nevertheless, pain free.
Then we were re-seated. This took about 1 hr 10 min to reach this point. I was then called forward into a private room with a very polite gentleman, who asked a number of very straightforward common sense questions. No hidden agenda or tripwires this gentleman was articulate, intelligent and very personable in his professional approach;
Questions:
• Name of my mother and father;
• wife’s name;
• where you met;
• what I did in my career, jobs etc.;
• wife’s job;
• why leaving UAE;
• where we met;
• how long married;
• children together;
• my intentions in America re job.

After questions he explained my passport would be ready for collection in a few days’ time. I was given a slip with the date and time to return for my passport; No fees were taken at this point; Total time 7 am to 10:10; 3 hrs. All in all painless but be patient polite and smile your long journeys end is neigh.
