Tom and I got to the embassy at 7:30 AM and our appointment was 8 AM. We stood in line until about 7:45, at which time we had to go through security. We both had backpacks and Tom had his big camera. We had to leave our mobiles and camera at security and they gave us a number slip to go and get the stuff when we were finished.
We were give a number and asked to sit and wait for it to be called. at 7:50 AM, our number was called. We went to the window and a man, named Keith, asked us for all the documentation we were required to give and stated in packet three. He also took Tom's fingerprints. He looked everything over and told us to sit back down. He also had Tom pay the $100 visa amount. This took about 10 minutes. We then sat back down in the big waiting room and waited for 45 minutes until our number was called. We went to the window and they checked Tom's fingerprints again to verify he was Tom. A very nice woman asked Tom how long we had been married, where we met, what he did for a living, what he planned on doing in the US, and last about his conviction. She then said she was happy to approve the K3 visa pending the fingerprint check. She didn't say how long this would take, just mentioned it could "take a while". We then went to pay the courier fee and that was it! Tom paid both the courier fee and visa amount by visa credit card. They don't accept American Express.
We were very worried about the outcome of the interview due to Tom having 1 conviction for theft, 4 cautions for theft, 1 caution for drunk & disorderly and 1 caution for fraud (fare evasion). We paid an immigration lawyer, Laurel Scott, to write up a short brief arguing that he was admissable to the states. They didn't even look at it and from what I could see, they didn't even consider the cautions at all, just the theft.
Wonderful experience! It is a bit scary to see all the coppers with big machine guns, but oh well.
