Guangzhou, China Review on November 3, 2014:

Review Topic: K1 Visa

This review is written from the perspective of the petitioner and will hopefully be helpful for other petitioners planning to go to Guangzhou. Even though I would not be able to attend the K1 visa interview with my fiancee, I wanted to provide support as well as get a chance to explore the city with her. We also wanted to go to Hong Kong, but decided not to go due to the protests.

Signing up on the ustraveldocs website for the interview was easy. We just had to wait for the date and time we wanted to have the interview on become available for booking. Usually there were two choices for times slots each day (8:15 and 9:20am). We chose the 8:15 time slot.

Guangzhou was easy to get around by subway. If your fiancee has the Baidu map app, it's also easy to navigate by bus. The consulate is located at the B1 exit of the Zhujiang New Town metro station on Line 3. We stayed at the Jianguo Hotel near the East Railway metro station which took about 20 minutes to get to the consulate. Be sure to allow for extra time since the interview is during peak time and the subway can get very crowded.

We arrived at about 8:00 for the interview. Outside the consulate, there was a scrum of people waiting to get through the gate. There were also ladies passing out fliers for services in America (getting a job, going to school, etc). The guards at the gate will check the appointment confirmation letter before letting anyone through. Once through the gate, there was another line to pass through security and into the consulate building.

I waited for my fiancee at the Starbucks across the street. When she came back a couple hours later, she told me she was approved!

Here were the interview questions:
Where did we meet?
How did we meet?
Can you show me a picture of your fiance?
Are you a member of the CCP? No.
Have you ever been a member of the CCP? Yes, when I was a student.
At that point, the officer asked additional questions about her prior membership and involvement.
