Seung-ho received his permanent residency stamp on 6/21/05 in Detroit. We had an 8:30 AM appointment and waited to see an offical until about 10:00, but after that it was smooth sailing. He has his stamp in his passport now and even got a Welcome to America! from the official that handled our case.
Some useful things to know about Detroit are:
1) They don't let you in the building until about 30 minutes before your appointment
2) Once you get in and go through the metal detector you need to put your appointment letter (in our case the I-797C Notice of Action) in a file box in the front
3) Once you put the letter in there, they are apparently split up amongst the officials. If the official that received your letter is moving slowly, you are just out of luck. We saw about 10-12 people go to their appointments who arrived after us.
The official we met with asked for:
1) Seung-ho's drivers license and my driver's license
2) Seung-ho's passport
3) Joint financial documents or other proof of marriage. We gave him
a. The title to our condo with both of our names
b. Our bank statement with both names
c. Our car insurance and condo insurance with both names
(I forgot to give him our join credit card copies, but doesn't seem to matter.)
4) Our 2004 taxes
5) Seung-ho's EAD
6) My new letter of employment (I changed jobs and we moved since applying)
Things he didn't ask for, but we gave him:
He didn't ask for the Advance Parole papers, but I asked him if he wanted them after he stamped Seung-ho's passport and he said that he did. Also, I have him Seung-ho's letter of employment, which he didn't really need, but said it was nice to have it.
Things he didn't look at that we had prepared:
1) our photos
2) my (USC) birth certificate
3) The new affadavit of support
4) The last 2 months work receipts
5) Seung-ho's family census register (Hojeokdeungbon). They should have already had this, but it was asked for on the interview notice.
6) The vague 'all documents you have ever received from USCIS'--I had brought all notices of action we have ever received.
7) My (USC) passport
8) Our marriage license (again, something they should have had already anyway)
Other than that, we just answered some basic questions about when and how we met, when we were married. And Seung-ho also had to answer questions again that were on the original AOS paperwork (Do you have a criminal record in any country? Have you ever solicited or been involved in prostitution?. etc.)
Hope this helps others out!
