Peru | Review on April 11, 2007: | BettyAndMe

Our interview date was 3/12/07. The main problem that we had was that there wasn't quite enough time to get the documents together. We only received the interview date on 02/26/07 -- two weeks before the interview and one of the documents (Antecedents de Judiciales) takes 15 days so it wasn't ready on the day of the interview.
The interview itself was pretty easy and is nothing to worry about. I accompanied Betty throughout the interview.
Our appointment was for 7:45 AM. We arrived at the embassy at 7:15 and that was about right. There were several guards (Peruvians) walking down the line outside the embassy checking to make sure that we had all of the documents that we would need inside. One of the guards told us that one of Betty's forms (DS-156), which she had filled out by hand, needed to be filled out and printed via a computer. I just told Betty to ignore her as the form plainly stated to "TYPE OR PRINT CLEARLY." Although this made Betty pretty nervous, she followed my advice and, sure enough, there was not a problem.
Inside the embassy, our experience was like everyone else's -- waiting on benches until called to one of 3 windows. We were called to the first window just before 8 AM. At that window, the woman wanted her documents and a few photos. We gave her 5 photos and she took them all (we had lots more with us but that was all that she wanted). We only spoke spanish at this window and we were at the window for less than 15 seconds.
At the second window, Betty was asked:
1. How/when did you meet (internet/August, '06).
2. My age (there's a 23-year age difference)
3. How many times I had been married (3)
4. Where/when did we meet in person for the first time (Lima/Sept. '06).
5. How many times had I been to Peru since we first met (4).
6. How many days total had we been together (>75).
We were then asked to sit down. Again, all conversation was in spanish and we were at this window for no more than 2 minutes.
At the third window was the first (and only) American. He appeared to be in his mid 30's, blonde, a little pudgy, no glasses. He seemed to speak essentially no spanish and all conversation was in English. He simply said that, once Betty turned in the missing form, she would be approved and gave us instructions for returning the form and passport in the next day or so. We were at this window about 30 seconds.
We left the embassy about 8:30 AM.
We put the form and passport in DHL the next day, 03/13, per the instructions and it was delivered to the embassy on Wednesday, 03/14. Betty received her visa about 3:30 pm Thursday, 03/15.
