Xifeng and I arrived early at the consulate in Guangzhou and she got in line with a large, heavy briefcase full of photos, emails, letters and documents. After she went in, I went for a long walk around the consulate neighborhood, used an ATM and came back to wait in the consulate coffee shop. I consumed quite a bit of coffee and lots of cookies and snacks while I chatted with a gentleman whose wife was trying for her visa for the third time. Xifeng finally came out after about three hours happily waving her acceptance slip.
Evidently she completely charmed the interviewer, who told her I'm a lucky man to be her husband. It turned out that all the neat three-ring binders I had used to organize her documents wouldn't fit through the slot in the window the interviewer sat behind, but the little album of photos did, so that was the only thing he actually looked at. But I think having the documents on hand probably made a good impression.
Overall, it was a reasonably pleasant experience and the interviewer and the staff at the consulate were courteous and friendly. Having the interview guidelines from the VisaJourney web site was an invaluable help.
