I went to the consulate, horrified of what might happen. Turns out it was the nicest and quickest experience I could have imagined.
I was allowed to use the immigrant line, so no waiting to get inside the building for me. I was handed my ticket, went through security check and inside the main building. (I read online you're only allowed to bring see through folders, well, I brought my big black folder anyway and didn't have any problem at all).
After getting into the main building I went to the reception and was told to directly go to window 22 to turn in my passport. (Some people sat down to wait for this, however, they won't call your number if you don't go there directly, there is a line for that specific window). I handed the officer my passport and the traveldocs printout and was then told to take a seat until my number was called.
After 5 minutes of waiting a really nice officer called me to her window, took my fingerprints, double checked my information and gave me a lot of information material concerning the immigration. Real nice lady, she already congratulated me for my visa before I even had the interview part.
I was then told to sit down again and wait until my number gets called. I barely sat when an officer called my name (instead of calling the number). He let me take the oath, took my fingerprints and then started the questions.
1. How did you meet?
-> I was so nervous I started chitchatting like he was a friend and he started making small talk about the weather in Wisconsin
2. Who is xxx (our sponsor)
--> told him xxx is my husband's maternal aunt
and THAT WAS IT.
He congratulated me, I almost cried, took all my photo albums and loads of documents that I never had to show once (not even invitation letter - crazy) and was able to leave after a good 30 minutes. Most of those were spent going through security and waiting to get into the main building though.
All in all a really pleasant experience. I'm so happy I will look through my photo albums now
