The overall experience at the Johannesburg, Sandton Consulate was positive: from the security guards to the interviewers.
They checked for letter of invitation for the appointment outside the security check point. leave all electronic goods includ. headphones in your car.
Walked into the door, took a seat (didnt need to get a number) and waited to be called. A South African lady called me to the window and asked for the forms and photographs which i passed through the hole (similar to a bank teller window).
She started to capture information on the computer while talking to me: how did we meet, when did we meet, did i meet his family? how was that? where did we get engaged etc.. (they dont like to use the telephone, so everyone gets to hear your conversation; equally. you also get to hear theirs..)
Then I had to hand over the evidence and it was a little difficult to fit the photo album through the hole in the window and went to pay for the visa at another window.
After paying I waited about 10 minutes for the second part of the interview.
The American gentleman was friendly and asked a range of questions and captured them onto the computer, some of which were similar/ the same as what the previous lady asked:
how did you meet, when did you meet? when did you get serious?, what do you do for a living, what does he do for a living? when did you first travel to the US? where in the US? Then he said, oh I know that place, where abouts were you...lucky I remembered highway names & signs etc., for how long? Where & when did you get engaged? who will be attending the wedding? what are your plans?
He then returned my documents to me and said good luck with everything in the US. I didnt know if I got my visa or not.. and he kept my passport and told me to return to collect it with a green slip stating that your visa will be ready for collection on mm/dd/yy and that they have to run more security checks?!
I went to collect my visa a few days later...
