Due to late mail we received the biometric appointment notification from USCIS 1 day after the assigned appointment date (USCIS set an appointment within 2 weeks of mailing the notice to us). Rather than mailing a snail-mail request for another biometrics appointment which could take weeks to process, we took a chance and drove nearly 4 hours to arrive at 8am at the Helena office. The people in the office were really friendly and understanding, and despite missing our original appointment by 2 days, they completed the biometrics in less than 20 minutes.
By the way, they indicated that they occasionally processed other "walk-ins" from other states who happen to be passing through Montana. Also they said they have processed biometrics for people as much as 1 week earlier than their assigned appointment. People working here were nice and friendly and appeared to have no issues with walk-ins. Also they told me that sometimes they can get busy with as many as 20 people a day, or as quiet as 2 a day, but usually it's just a few day depending on the services provided.
In summary, for biometrics they take walk-ins, and are friendly.
