My fiance went for his interview yesterday and the experience was very positive.
His interview was at 9:30am. He got there around 7am and waited in a cafe until 9am at which time he approached the embassy to see if he could enter. The guard turned him away but as he was walking away, the guard called him back to let him in. He went through security and had to turn off and leave his phone and keys there with security.
He was called to the window and was asked to provide them with the forms they asked him to bring with him: DS-156 (2 copies), DS-156k, DS-157 and DS-230 Part I only. He also needed to give them his birth certificate, celibacy certificate, police report, and court record with all of the translations. They asked him to put my name on some form as well. I'm not sure which form it was because the forms were completely filled out. I think it was another form they supplied. He spelled my last name wrong, because of nerves, but they didn't mind. He was then asked to sit.
After he waited for a while, a woman called him up to take his finger prints. After she took them, she asked him to answer some questions:
- How did you meet your fiance?
- When did you meet?
- When did you meet in person?
- Did you talk to other Americans?
- Why are you interested in just Americans? (She was just trying to determine if he was. He never said that he was just interested in Americans)
- Why aren't you interested in Moroccans in the US?
- Are you and your fiance both Muslim?
- Is she converted? How and when did she convert?
- Why didn't she marry the one who helped her convert?
- Is she only interested in Moroccans?
- Have you ever talked to her daughter?
- Have you just talked to her only a few times?
- How do keep in contact?
Then she looked at the pictures I sent to USCIS with the I-129f application. She asked him a couple of questions about them and then gave them to him. She gave him a piece of paper and told him to come back on Friday to pick up his visa.
Overall the experience was very positive. He said he saw some get denied and some that had much longer interviews than his. He didn't go into a room for the interview, they just had him answer questions at the window using a phone.
His whole experience from start to finish was just over 3 hours. I was surprised to get his call because I expected he would be there for most of the day. So, when he called, I was worried something was wrong. But, he was just calling to tell me the good news!
We were very nervous about the interview based on some of the reviews we read and the unknowns about what to bring with us. My advice is to just be over prepared. They didn't look at any of our evidence that we brought, and we had a lot, but I'm sure that each person's experience is slightly different because everyone's situation is different. We don't have any red flags in our situation or anything to cause concern. As far as the forms are concerned, fill out what they send you. Don't worry if they are expired. They don't care about that.
Some background on our situation:
We have known each other for just over 1 year.
We were engaged just 3 months after meeting.
I only visited him once for a total of 6 days.
He never visited me.
I have a daughter and I am divorced.
He has never been married with no children.
He has a relative that lives here in the US.
He speaks English pretty well - definitely not perfectly, but well.
I don't speak Arabic and only a little French.
I am 4 years older than him.
That's all I can think to tell you. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me.
Good luck everyone - you'll get your approval, inshallah!
