Ok, so after being put in additional processing for 22 weeks and having to cancel my initial wedding, then having to wait an extra 6 weeks to get my EAD because of additional checks, then receiving an RFE for changing my name (took my wife's name)....I finally was invited to my interview today at the Dallas office.
I have to say, it was a REALLY good experience. After the above mentioned issues, I was expecting yet more frustration but it was the simplest part of the process to date. Here's how it went.
We got to the office about 30mins before our 9.30am time slot. We were met by some very friendly security guys who were laughing and joking with us. I had told my wife to leave any electronic devices in the car (you have to at the embassy) but it became apparent that you're actually allowed to take them in with you. We gave the security officers our appointment letter and they directed us to the second floor.
We went to the second floor and traded our appointment letter for a pager, the flashing kind you get while waiting for your table at a restaurant. At exactly 9.30am, our pager went off and we were met by our officer (Sam). Sam was very friendly and we joked about it finally being the end of the week before he took us in to his office. Before we sat down we swore that we were telling the truth and he asked for both our Passports and Photo IDs.
After this he went through confirming our details that we had on file i.e. address etc and then proceeded to ask my wife and I about what we do for work. We had some fun conversations during this part. Sam then asked the yes/no questions on the application form for clarification and then asked to see my wife's latest W2 and tax return. After this, he said he's taking the I-94 from my passport and he'll keep that.
We were in there for about 15mins. He said he needs to send the file to his manager for review before approving and that it'll take 3-4 days, then I should hear back in 2-3 weeks. I asked if he needed to see any of the evidence I had brought with me (apartment lease, car lease, joint bank statement, photos etc) and he said no, your case looks very logical from what you've already provided. He then took one of our photos (I think he just felt bad that we'd prepared and didn't need it) and then we were done.
When I got home, I checked my status on USCIS and it said the card had been ordered and in production.
Honestly, just don't worry about the interview. If you're legit and have nothing to hide, it's really straight forward.
